IUFRO Landscape Ecology Conference 2012
Coordinadores: IUFRO LE Group
We have the pleasure to inform that the next bianual conference of the IUFRO Landscape Ecology Working Party will be held in Concepción Chile, between 5th and 12th November. This will be the first time that the Working Group will gather in Latin America.
Latin America offers new challenges to Forest Landscape Ecology due to its tremendous heterogeneity of ecosystems and diverse socioeconomic conditions. South American forests represent a large fraction of the world's biodiversity and, in turn, are characterized by progressive deforestation and degradation. Particularly, Chile's forest landscapes face substantial changes and play a significant role in sustaining humans.

Simposio en IUFRO Landscape Ecology Conference 2012
Coordinadores: Guillermo Martínez Pastur, Stefan Schindler, Christopher Anderson
Symposium title: "The role of long-term research for ecology, management and conservation of the native forests"
Long-term research is needed to assure management and conservation outcomes that integrate ecological criteria for sustainability. This symposium tries to cover the outcomes and management implications of silvicultural and ecological cycles in natural forests around the World and the linking with southern forests of America. It will compare different ecological studies, including the impacts of traditional and new harvesting practices, and presentations will draw on the role of long-term ecological research sites in developing the information base required for ecosystem management and conservation. Eight oral presentations will cover new management proposal for native forests, forest fragmentation, restoration, ecosystem services and land-cover changes, and the path by which research results can be translated into management, conservation and/or sustainable development practices.

Synopsis
Maintaining the biological diversity and ecosystem services of native forests requires not only avoiding their conversion to agriculture or plantations, but also using specifically chosen harvesting practices, grazing patterns and fire regimes as part of their management, which can be guided by the pattern and intensity of natural disturbance with which each forest type has evolved. In this context, long-term research is needed to assure management and conservation outcomes that integrate ecological criteria for sustainability. Thus, the symposium will be a networking opportunity for researchers working in these topics. Presentations (oral and poster) will cover biological inventory and taxonomy, managing biodiversity research and data, the specific challenges of conducting long-term research, and the path by which research results can be translated into management, conservation and/or sustainable development practices.
Justification
Much of the global timber harvesting is carried out in native forests, as occurring actually in Argentina and Chile. These forests are rich in globally unique biodiversity and often contain significant old-growth elements. A sustainable forest management framework requires that the applied silviculture practices conserve, protect and improve forest biodiversity, while maintaining an economically viable industry. Establishing and monitoring long-term research plots and demonstration sites has led to: (i) definition of baseline conditions and the impacts of different silvicultural treatments, (ii) new harvesting systems that maintain yield while improving conservation values (e.g., variable retention systems and silvopastoral systems), and (iii) a wide spectrum of monitoring methodologies. This thematic has the potential to address regional socio-economic challenges while maintaining an ecologically diverse forest landscape with substantial old-growth features. The proposed sessions would contribute to addressing these challenges through: (i) providing a state-of-the-art synthesis of research, (ii) identifying research gaps not covered to date, (iii) providing views and examples of the interplay in modern forestry between biodiversity values and harvesting needs, (iv) demonstrating the contribution of long-term sites to the research, management and conservation of forested ecosystems, and (v) introduce novel ecologic studies to improve the knowledge for sustainable forested ecosystem management.
Special Issue proposal
We propose to lead a Special Issue in the Journal of Forest Ecology and Management (Elsevier), in the framework of the conference and symposium. Prof. Peter Attiwill, Editor-in-Chief, invite us to organize a proposal with 20 selected papers, both from symposium and conference contributions, and present the project to the Editors to approve the proposal within this year. We request to the organizers of the Conference the promotion of this initiative within the participants. We will request the summaries before and during the Conference.
Call-for-papers: In the framework of the Symposium: "The role of long-term research for ecology, management and conservation of the native forests" during the next IUFRO LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY CONFERENCE 2012 ("Sustaining humans and forests in changing landscapes", www.iufrole2012.cl) (Concepción, Chile, 5-12 November) we propose to organize a Special Issue in the Journal of Forest Ecology and Management (Elsevier) with the tentative title: "Ecology, management and conservation of the native forests". Prof. Peter Attiwill, Editor-in-Chief, invite us to organize a proposal with 20 selected papers, both from symposium and conference contributions, and present the project to the Editors to approve the proposal within this year. For these reasons, we will receive a brief summary of papers that can be potentially included in the proposal. Papers must focus in forest management and conservation strategies or actions, based on native forests (not plantations) around the World.
